Demo, day 3 (+ framing...)

Although demolition is still very much in progress, there are some new studs and headers appearing in select spots, so I've started a new Flickr album. I'll keep adding to the Demo album (linked below), as long as they're still 'tearing up jack' upstairs.

Floor excavation has begun: Cute patriotic linoleum tiles, topped with leveling compound, then plywood, and then vinyl-roll floor covering


For those of you who aren't familiar with vintage construction, this shot of the ceiling shows the house's "knob and tube" wiring, which was the standard for residential electric service until the 1930s. The white knobs are ceramic insulators; the current-carrying copper wires are covered in a cotton cloth mesh. I've seen individual knobs over the years in our old houses, but never the whole network exposed. If you're curious, Wikipedia has more photos of this type of system, and a better explanation.

Here you can see the guts of the old double-hung window mechanism. Miraculously, they all have their iron weights, still. No wonder they work so well!
