A place for everything

Noel started on all the millwork on Tuesday. The shelves look great! Although, actually, he had to re-do the upper cubbies -- he didn't follow Andrew's painfully detailed drawings, and ended up with too many rows. But the general idea is there. The lowest row will hold cookbooks, and be closed on the hall side; the rest will hold plates and dishes, and be open on both sides. Noel also started framing in the doors and windows. I guess when this is all done, they'll start working on the breakfast-room bench. We left the plans in the garage, but apparently Noel accidentally took them home.

In bathroom news: We're in the home stretch on tile. The floor is basically done, with the exception of grouting everything, and some bare spots where the toilet will go in. The photo shows the hex tile on the floor, with one of our accent-tile experiments. (The black tiles are just laid on top.) We felt so rushed -- and I felt so stressed having to do this from a distance -- that we just decided to go with plain white tiles. We can always have someone come in and put down accents at some point in the future if it looks too plain, but we didn't feel like we had time to do it right and/or live with our decision for a few days... they wanted to grout NOW. Oh, well.

The marble subway tiles look cool in the shower. Maybe not quite as retro as I'd hoped, but they do look sharp. (Cam assures me they look as good in person -- if so, I'll be very happy.)

• Mark (the stone craftsman) is coming Monday to measure for the bathroom pieces and the butcherblock, and to see what's up in the rest of the kitchen.
